报告简介:Supercomputing has
received long-missed intensive attentions from industry and academia
recently. This renewed interest is due to two new developments in
computing: Cloud computing and multicore/manycore systems. Cloud
computing uses a cloud of computers, usually a cluster of
supercomputers, and Grid technology to provide virtual computers on
demand. Multicore/manycore processors put many cores into one chip
to overcome the physical constraints of a single processor and
deliver high computing power on one chip. Cloud computing requires
huge computing power to meet ever increasing users’ demand, whereas
multicore/manycore systems make parallel processing a norm of
computing. Both of them, however, face the scalability issue: how to
scale up the capacity? In this talk we first introduce the concept
and motivation of Cloud computing and multicore/manycore
architecture, discuss the difference between Grid and Cloud
computing. Then we study scalability issues, especially the
scalability of multicore/manycore architectures. We conclude with an
identified scalability bottleneck and its corresponding suggested
solutions.
报告人简介:Dr. Xian-He Sun is a
professor of computer science and the director of the Scalable
Computing Software laboratory at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT),
and is a guest faculty in the Mathematics and Computer Science
Division and Computing Division at the Argonne and Fermi National
Laboratory, an adjunct professor of Shanghai University,
respectively. Before joining IIT, he worked at DoE Ames National
Laboratory, at ICASE, NASA Langley Research Center, at Louisiana
State University, Baton Rouge, and was an ASEE fellow at Navy
Research Laboratories. Dr. Sun's research interests include parallel
and distributed processing, software systems, performance
evaluation, and high-end computing.
