Abstract: Driven dissipative dynamical systems generically have attracting sets that are replete with unstable   periodic orbits. These orbits are very useful for describing the system's short-time behavior, and they may also be useful for developing statistical models of the system's long-time behavior. For low-dimensional systems, it has long been possible to find these orbits computationally. Petascale computers will make feasible the computation and explortation of unstable periodic orbits in high-dimensional systems, such as fluids and plasmas.  In this talk, we describe the HYPO4D project, a joint US/UK endeavor which aims to use petascale computation that will soon be available on the National Science Foundation's TeraGrid to study unstable periodic orbits in hydrodynamic turbulence. In particular, we describe new variational principles that have given rise to new parallel algorithms for determining unstable periodic orbits and their associated periods efficiently and with high accuracy.
